Donelda and John

Donelda has been volunteering at the Airdrie Food Bank since September 2010, with her brother-in-law, John, joining her this past year. Both are very passionate about being a change in their community and are a great example of how volunteers make a difference. Donelda also volunteers with the Airdrie Lioness and helps the both organizations stay connected throughout the year especially during Christmas Hampers.

Donelda and John are always willing to help even when the job isn't especially delightful (as seen in our potato photo). We are very grateful to have Donelda and John as part of the food bank family!

Donelda & John

In their words...

“I started volunteering as a way to meet more people. I continue to volunteer because I feel obligated to give back to my community. I am physically & mentally able to help others so feel an obligation to do so. The Airdrie Food Bank, where I have volunteered for a number of years, has always been such a warm, friendly, happy atmosphere in which to volunteer. I've met a large number of other volunteers who have all been happy to be helping there. I've also met a large number of recipients who are very gracious and grateful to be able to access food when in need. In general, volunteering makes one feel much better about themselves by giving back. It's the old adage... It's better to give than receive.” - Donelda

Shawnee Hoffman

Shawnee joined the Airdrie Food Bank in the Spring of 2012 when she initiated the Airdrie Zombie Cup event.

Shawnee is very involved in Airdrie through both her personal and business life (Artsy Fartsy Face Body Art & More) and wanted to give back to her community. The Airdrie Food Bank was lucky enough to be the chosen charity. Shawnee’s event was a new concept bringing Zombie’s from Airdrie and the surrounding community to play a fun game of football. Because of Shawnee’s countless hours organizing, approaching community businesses and getting other local artists involved this events was a great success. Shawnee has made this an annual event and is working on the 2013 Airdrie Zombie Cup bringing in more vendors, spectators and Zombies. You can find Shawnee helping out at various charitable events as her heart for her community reaches out.

The staff of the Airdrie Food Bank have embraced Shawnee not only as a volunteer and supporter but as a friend. Her hard work and dedication acts as a reminder of how someone with determination and an idea can work hard and produce such a fun and exciting event as well as make a difference in their community!

Lori McRitchie & Shawnee Hoffman

In their words...

"I like volunteering for the Airdrie Food Bank because it allows me to get involved and give back to the community. This is important to me from when I was a child and my mom needed to use a Food Bank. Now that I can give back, that makes me feel good. It has also been nice teaching my own children about giving back. I have met a lot of great people through the Zombie Cup and at the Food Bank. And I love what I do!" - Shawnee
